Annotations Motivation and Recognition

Description

Through the use of the ‘Class Dojo’ app I am able to motivate and recognise students’ efforts and achievements. Points can be awarded or removed depending on the student’s behaviour and efforts in the classroom. The three students with the highest amount of points at the end of the week received a small prize. The app was often shown on the television screen so that students could see the current point tally to see if they needed to improve their efforts or behaviour. The images shown are of the points tally and of awarding or removing a point from a student.

Personal Philosophy

I believe it is important for students to be motivated to learn and one way I do this is by recognising their efforts and achievements. By recognising students’ achievements students are motivated to persist with their learning.

Other Theory

According to Maslow’s hierarchy of needs individuals in the self-esteem tier are motivated to achieve and receive recognition (Maslow, 1943). “In the classroom context, the concept of student motivation is used to explain the degree to which students invest attention and effort in various pursuits… student motivation is reflected in the motives and goals they strive to achieve.” (Wentzel & Brophy, 2014, p.3)

Annotations - Taking Responsibility of Learning

Description

Through the ‘Class Dojo’ app students are encouraged to take responsibility of their learning. Students are recognised for things such as being on task, participating, persistence, working hard, working as a team and helping others. Students can also be told that the need to work on things such as respect, being on task, talking out of turn, not completing homework and being prepared to learn.

Personal Philosophy

Learning is a lifelong journey and it is one of the responsibilities of the teacher to encourage students to become responsible for their own learning. I do this by developing portfolios, setting goals with students and encouraging them to reach their goals.

Other Theory

When students take responsibility of their own learning it can result in an increase in higher-order and critical thinking skills(Bloom et al, 2000), problem solving strategies and self evaluation of learning (Bujan, 1996)

Annotations - Engaging Parents/Carers

Description

Through the ‘Class Dojo’ iPad app I was able to keep parent/carers informed and involved in their child’s learning.  Teachers are able to send messages to parents and parents are able to log in and view their child’s behaviour and efforts report. The image shown is of one child’s report. Another function of the app is to updated parents on their child’s learning through posts in a social media format that is exclusively for the parents to view.

VIT Standard

  • 3.7 Engage parents/carers in the educative process, plan for appropriate and contextually relevant opportunities for parents/carers to be involved in their child’s learning.

  • 4.5 Use ICT safely, responsibly and ethically, Incorporate strategies to promote the safe, responsible and ethical use of ICT in learning and teaching

PoLT

  • 6.3 uses technologies in ways that reflect professional and community practices.

Personal Philosophy

As a teacher I strive to involve parents/carers in their child’s learning journey as much as possible and keep them updated on what their child is learning in the classroom. I believe it is also important for students to know that they are supported throughout their learning process.

Other Theory

According to Harris & Goodall, Getting parents/carers to be involved in their child’s learning leads to more positive engagement (2008). “Parental engagement is one of the key factors in securing higher student achievement and school improvement.”(Harris & Goodall, 2008, p.278) Parents/carers also have a wealth of knowledge of their own that students can benefit from (Stern, 2003).
