applied curriculum project; 2014

JEBS Kids - Hume Central Secondary College

Background

The project was aimed towards Year 7 who are seen to be trying really hard in all their lessons, behaving appropriately in their classes and performing well academically. Their tasks were to design, create/deliver, and evaluate a series of purposeful products that were delivered in the form of a personal magazine which functions as a folio of evidence.

The program ran during class time where the 16 selected students instead of going to their normal class would come to the JEBS Kids program as a sort of reward for their efforts in class. Some of the different activities that were conducted as part of the program were; creating a personal CD cover, music and body percussion, teamwork activities, leadership activities, making a volcano and various other science activities.

Aims

The aims of the project were;

  • To increase students' engagement, sense of personal achievement and confidence and their connectedness to school.

  • To build students' leadership skills

  • To further develop a more positive school culture.

Outcomes

  • Students each developed a magazine of evidence of their learning which demonstrated their achievement of a range of age-appropriate AusVELS standards.

  • Students actively participated in teamwork activities throughout the program.

  • Students showed improvement in leadership skills throughout the program.

  • Students improved their flexibility in their creative processes by designing their own front cover, decorating other pages of the magazine and participating in activities.

  • Students who participated in the program helped motivate other students to improve their behaviour and other aspects in classes to become a part of the program.
