PHILOSOPHY

Education’s role in today’s society is to provide students with the knowledge and skills that will prepare them physically, mentally and socially for the Australia and world that we live in. The role of the student in education is to be motivated and active participants in their learning journey. The teacher as a facilitator of learning, motivates and guides students on their lifelong learning journey preparing them to be active citizens of society.

Building strong relationships with students and learning their interests are some ways that I believe can help aid student learning and to stimulate interest and curiosity. I am able to build a culture of respect and acceptance in my classroom where every student feels welcomed and valued not matter. I have a zero tolerance to bullying, having experienced it myself, and I do everything in my ability to stop it from happening to others and ensure that my students are equipped with the knowledge and skills that can help them do the same.

My classroom is a place for active learning where students are motivated and encouraged to take responsibility of their learning. I use a variety of tools to aid the management of my classroom and participation of students such as random name selectors and point systems based on student effort and behaviour.

We know from Gardner’s multiple intelligences that everyone learns differently and has different learning needs. I strive to cater to all students learning needs and abilities to ensure they have the best chance of success as possible. I do this by differentiating learning to suit the learning needs of my students through incorporating activities that cater for the different multiple intelligences and for different abilities.

Assessment is an essential part of education and I believe it can be an excellent tool for helping students grow and achieve in all areas of learning. Good assessment practises require a number of different measures as using only one type of assessment does not give a full picture of a student’s learning. I use a variety of assessment practises, including assessment for learning (formative), assessment as learning and assessment of learning (summative) to inform my teaching practice. I work with my students to set individual learning goals and encourage them to self-assess using tools such as checklists and rubrics.

Technology

In today’s world technology is all around us and it is important for students to be exposed to a wide range in order for them to be prepared for their future. Being an ICT teacher I strongly believe that the use of technology can be advantageous to student learning when incorporated effectively and efficiently into the classroom program and that it can help inspire students’ love of learning. I also believe that it is important for students to learn to use technology ethically and responsibly.

I believe –and practice- that learning is a lifelong process and as an educator it is my passion to guide young learners on their journey.
