Description

One event that was happening within the school community while on placement was Book Week. For reading during the week a range of Book Week activities we incorporated into the daily learning program to encourage students’ love of reading. The various activities are shown in the reading planner attached. One particular lesson was based around the book ‘the Stone Lion’ by Margaret Wild and Ritva Voutila where students made their own lion statue out of newspaper. Another activity was based around the book called ‘One Minutes Silence’ by David Metzenthen and Michael Camilleri where students spend time looking at World War I records of William Henry Rayner. A major part of the Book Week celebrations was the book parade where parents/carers attended and watched while students showed off their costumes of their favourite book characters.

Personal Philosophy

I believe that it is important for teachers to build and maintain collaborative relationships with parents/carers in order to improve student learning. The local and broader communities have a lot to offer to improve student learning and to be active citizens students should be given opportunities to engage

Being an avid reader, I place high importance on developing students' love of reading.

Other Theory

It is important for teachers to model ‘wild’ reading habbits to their students and encourage these behaviours through structured reading of a variety of books (Miller, 2014)
