Annotations - Student safety and behaviour

Description

Rules are set in place in order to keep students safe and to maintain a culture of respect in the learning environment. Sometimes students overstep the line that rule create. The image shown is one discipline program that my placement school has adopted based perceptual control theory (Bourbon, 1995). The approach gets students to think about their actions and take responsibility. I used this approach throughout my placement and found it work well with my students with their actions not being repeated.

VIT Standard

  • 4.3 Manage challenging behaviour; manage challenging behaviour by establishing and negotiating clear expectations with students and address discipline issues promptly, fairly and respectfully.

  • 4.4 Maintain student safety, Ensure students’ well-being and safety within the school and/or system, curriculum and legislative requirements

PoLT

  • 1.2 promotes a culture of value and respect for individuals and their communities

  • 3.1 uses strategies that are flexible and responsive to the values, needs and interests of individual students

Personal Philosophy

t is imperative to maintain student safety at all times and manage challenging behaviour to ensure student learning is not disrupted. I also believe that if challenging behaviour is reoccurring the teacher should attempt to find the cause of the behaviour.

Other Theory

Difficult behaviour can and does occur in every classroom. (Churchill, 2011) sometime the behaviour is caused by the basic human need for significance and belonging (Churchill, 2011) which is the third tier of Maslow’s hierarchy of needs (Maslow, 1943)
