Taking a stand

Annotations - Respect and acceptance

Description

One of the assessments we had to complete as part of the unit AEB2301 - Rethinking Australian Studies was to take a stand on an issue related to Indigenous Australians. The issue chosen for the assessment was the forced closure of remote communities in the Northern Territory. The assessment attached discusses the issue, our choices in relation to the protest, relevant policy and how we would apply this knowledge in the classroom. The pictures shown are from the protest.

PoLT

1.2 promotes a culture of value and respect for individuals and their communities

3.1 use strategies that are flexible and responsive to the values, needs and interests of individual students.

Personal Philosophy

It is important for teachers to create a classroom culture of respect, and acceptance of every individual, their values and opinions and to be responsive to their needs. Students should always be given opportunities to learn about and develop respect for different cultures in order to develop understanding and respect.

Other Theory

The fourth tier of Maslow’s hierarchy of need is esteem which includes self-esteem, confidence, achievement, respect of others and respect by others. According to the hierarchy, students need to be accepted and respected in the classroom before they can progress to the self-actualisation tier where their motivation can help them reach their true potential.
